Setting your freelance rate is the most important decision you will make as a freelancer. Charge too little and you are working for less than a salaried role with none of the benefits. Charge too much without the portfolio to back it — and you will not get clients.
Here is how to think about it.
Step 1: Start with market benchmarks. Your rate must be defensible against the market. If mid-level web developers in India charge ₹800–₹2,000/hr, starting at ₹500 signals inexperience even if your work is solid.
Step 2: Calculate your minimum viable rate. Take your desired monthly income, add 30% for taxes, non-billable time, and gaps between projects. Divide by 120 (typical billable hours per month). That is your floor — never go below it.
Step 3: Adjust for client type. International clients pay 3–5x more in rupee terms than domestic clients for the same skill. If you are just starting, domestic clients teach you faster. If you have 1+ year experience, international clients pay more.
