Most Indian freelancers leave money on the table because they quote too low upfront or never raise their rates with existing clients. Here is a direct playbook.
For new clients — quoting rule: Always quote above your target rate. The client will negotiate down. If they accept without any pushback, you quoted too low.
Script for new client inquiry: 'Based on your project scope, my rate is ₹[X]/hr. For a fixed-price project of this type, I estimate [Y] hours, making the total ₹[Z]. Happy to discuss scope if budget is a constraint.'
Script for raising rates with existing clients: 'I have been working with you for [X months] and I want to flag that my rates are being revised from [date]. My new rate is ₹[X]/hr, which reflects current market benchmarks. I value our working relationship and want to give you advance notice.'
Key principle: Justify rate increases with outcomes, not tenure. 'My work delivered [specific result] for you' is stronger than 'I have been working with you for 2 years.'
Includes take-home after 44ADA tax and a shareable rate card.
